About Yarns of Comfort

The creation of Yarns of Comfort was inspired by the experiences of my parents during multiple courses of cancer treatment. Both of my parents went through cancer treatment, and I was right by their sides.  My mother’s diagnosis was first. She had ovarian and uterine cancer. She was a champ!  After successful surgery, she underwent chemotherapy. Her outlook throughout was completely positive and grateful.  I feel her positivity had a massive impact on her recovery. Not to discount the treatment her doctor administered, but attitude plays a big part.

My father’s diagnosis came exactly one week after my mother completed her chemo treatments and was cancer free. He was diagnosed with two types of stomach cancer. He underwent a Whipple surgery, which at the time was very effective, but also very complex and lengthy compared to current surgical treatments. At the time the expected mortality rate was quite high.  With hope and lots of prayers he came through the surgery.  After spending a month in the hospital, he was able to come home. Shortly after returning home, he started his chemo treatment. Although his outlook on his situation was more fatalistic, my mother’s optimism and care, along with the doctor's amazing care, worked and he was cancer free as well. Many years later he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and another amazing doctor treated him and once again he was cancer free.

Through all these trials, I was by each of their sides, caring for them during all their treatments.  While their treatments were lifesaving, the chemotherapy treatments themselves took their tolls on each of them. The chemotherapy treatment rooms are cold and sterile, and the medication itself is cold.  For each of them I brought along comfort items and saw that the item of warmth and comfort made a noticeable impact, and I also noticed that other patients without such items suffered unnecessarily.

My goal is for everyone going through cancer treatment to have the same simple but effective comforts that I provided to my family.

I also want children in hospital to have something comfortable, be it a blanket or an amigurumi – a crocheted animal toy.

Babies and parents alike in NICU need comfort items. Blankets help to make the environment warm and not so sterile.

There will be times when people must undergo treatments.  However, they don’t have to be uncomfortable in cold and sterile environments.

We at Yarns of Comfort want to change that.

We will do everything in our power to make sure Yarns of Comfort is a success - to make peoples’ lives better, one at a time. I believe with your help we can make this happen.
